Apple’s Updated AirTags Are Louder and Reach Farther — But Not Much Else Has Changed

AirTags — Apple’s Find My network-enabled tracking tiles — are the best in their category, so long as you are in the Apple ecosystem. They look better than any of their competitors, are connected to the largest network, and have the largest set of accessories available. And so, the company did not need to do much to improve them for this second generation. The new AirTag, announced on Sunday, costs the same as the original — $29 for one, or $99 for a four-pack — and keeps the same compact, coin-shaped design. Every existing accessory, from keychains to luggage tags, will work with the updated model. What has changed is under the hood. Apple has fitted the new AirTag with its second-generation Ultra Wideband chip — the same silicon found in the iPhone 17 lineup and Apple Watch Ultra 3. This extends the range of Precision Finding, the feature that provides an on-screen arrow pointing directly toward a lost item, by about 50 percent. An upgraded Bluetooth chip also expands the distance at which a misplaced AirTag can be located on a map. Apple also says the new model is 50 percent louder than the original, meaning you can hear the alert chime from up to twice as far away. The company has also introduced a new, distinctive tone designed to make the sound easier to pick out in noisy environments, which is handy in theory. Also, if you have a Series 9 or later Apple Watch, you can now use the Precision Finding feature to track down an AirTag directly from your wrist.Battery life remains unchanged — the new AirTag uses the same user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell — but Apple has improved how battery status is reported. The original model only notified users when the battery was critically low. The new version displays a precise percentage, .It has been nearly five years since Apple introduced the original AirTag in April 2021, and though this isn’t an exciting update, it’s a pretty good one.
