Frank A. Bennack Jr. has been nominated to the position of chairman of the board of Lincoln Center Inc., the New York Times reported on its Web site yesterday. Mr. Bennack served as President and CEO of magazine publisher Hearst for 23 years before he resigned in 2002. If confirmed, his term will begin in June.
The chairmanship was left vacant this spring following the resignation of Omnicom Chairman Bruce Crawford, who had served in the position since 2002, when he replaced Beverly Sills, who subsequently became chairwoman of the Metropolitan Opera.
Mr. Crawford’s three-year tenure in the unpaid post came during a tumultuous time in the organization’s history. One of its anchor tenants, the New York Philharmonic, last year seemed about to decamp to Carnegie Hall. Another, City Opera, campaigned intensely for an offcampus home. Plans for an extensive redesign of the campus remain unsettled.
