A Little Bit Country

Despite what many say, New York is a great cycling city. The bus lines and reliability of cab driving make it far easier to negotiate than the usual American metropolis. Still, it’s hard to beat getting off the grid and away from traffic. No part of the Tri-State is more suitable – or more beautiful – than New Jersey’s River Road.
Take the George Washington Bridge bike path at 177th Street, go left as soon as you come off the bridge, fly down the hill, and take the left into Palisades Interstate Park. You’ll ride under the GW and find yourself on a secluded, tree-lined, riverside path. Rolling up and down, it’s 8 miles of pure cycling heaven with a kicker mile and a quarter of hill – steep enough but short enough to dream about. The road is the gateway to superb rides to Piermont, Nyack, Lake Rockland, and, for the paceliners, Bear Mountain. I’ll see you on Saturday afternoon.
