Jaguar Still Can’t Seem To Turn the Corner

Ferrari expected the design of its first EV, the Luce, to be controversial. It was going to get a lot of backlash, and it did — even more than the company anticipated. And so, months before showing the exterior, Ferrari revealed the cabin and controls. Designed by Jony Ive and Marc Newson, the interior was a truly innovative, beautiful upgrade on both the standard electric-car look and the cluttered interiors of Ferrari’s gas cars, and it received a lot of positive feedback.And yet none of that could stop the wave of negativity that followed the car’s full unveiling.Jaguar seemingly hasn’t learned this lesson, and so — ahead of the unveiling of its production electric grand tourer, the Type 01 — it has tried to buy some goodwill by revealing the interior styling. Car journalists have also driven test mules and praised the comfort and performance of a GT expected to cost about $150,000, but these interior pictures are the first look at the final car — and it looks pleasant, but also not particularly inspired.Jaguary Type 01. Courtesy of Ross AndersonLike so many luxury electric cars, it’s a minimalist interior consisting of simple shapes and surfaces, but now handled in soft browns, with some retro concept-car details.The released pictures show a brass-finished central spine dividing the cabin and connecting to the dashboard, which is thankfully not dominated by screens: It has just a single small vertical display in the center and a large screen behind the steering wheel. The wheel may be the strangest part, with a blocky two-spoke design and a thick central hub. It reminds me of old Citroën concepts, and though it looks distinct in pictures, I’m not sure it will exactly look premium in person. Then you get lots of hidden compartments and drawers that apparently open with various buttons, and it all looks nice, but it doesn’t scream luxury. It all looks like it could be in a mid-priced Polestar, not a new luxury car.Jaguary Type 01. Courtesy of Ross AndersonJaguar will reveal the exterior at New York City on October 6, with deliveries scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, and the early hints suggest that — despite the disastrous ad campaign that preceded the Type 00 concept — it will be a relatively impressive car. Its three-motor powertrain produces more than 1,000 metric horsepower and 959 pound-feet of torque, and journalists who’ve tried the test mules praise how quiet and comfortable it is. But it’s also an expensive electric GT, and other carmakers have struggled to make electric four-doors sell. A slightly cool, minimalist interior won’t be enough to change that.
