Nine Inch Nails Deliver Free Album

The rock act Nine Inch Nails announced early Monday that it is offering its new album, “The Slip,” through its Web site, for free.
In a post on nin.com, the band’s longtime leader, Trent Reznor, said, “Thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years — this one’s on me.”
Like the British group Radiohead, which initially released its most recent album, “In Rainbows,” on its Web site for a fan-chosen amount of money (some chose zero), Mr. Reznor unveiled the new Nine Inch Nails album without the advertising and marketing fanfare that typically accompany a major release. But “The Slip” appears to be the first time a major act has released an album without giving people a way to pay for it. “The Slip” arrives just two months after Nine Inch Nails distributed the album “Ghosts I-IV,” and allowed fans to acquire a portion of it for free or buy the full recording for $5.
“The Slip” will be available on CD and vinyl in July, according to representatives of the band.
