Lou Barlow, Mercury Lounge, March 1

If there were an indie rock hall of fame, Lou Barlow would be in it several times over. The former member of Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, and Folk Implosion is now touring in support of his first official solo effort (as opposed to his numerous collections of lo-fi home recordings and whatnot), the appropriately named “Emoh.”

Sleater-Kinney, Mercury Lounge, March 2 & 3 The Olympia, Wash. riot grrrl pioneers are trying out a new direction for their seventh studio album (out in May on SubPop). Instead of angular guitars and crisp, piercing vocals, they’re tending toward a heavier, fuzzier, more experimental sound that calls to mind the Fiery Furnaces and Jimi Hendrix. It’s a welcome change – one that should win them new fans and fresh raves.

Hubert Sumlin, BB King Blues Club & Grill, March 5 In 1941, 10-year-old Sumlin snuck into an Arkansas juke joint to watch Howlin’ Wolf. In the 1950s, Sumlin joined the band and played with Wolf until 1976. “About Them Shoes,” released this January, featured Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and others. All the heavyweight rock players defer to Mr. Sumlin, because Mr. Sumlin is electric blues guitar. He plays BB King’s on Saturday night with Levon Helm, David Johansen, and guests.
