Britain’s Lord Mandelson Clings to Title Despite New Emails Suggesting Close Bond With ‘Best Pal’ Jeffrey Epstein

The ousted British ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, may wish he had never called Jeffrey Epstein his “best pal,” but he’s showing no desire to give up his coveted title of “lord.”Lord Mandelson has resigned from Britain’s ruling Labour Party after the latest Epstein documents showed his bond to the late sex offender. However, he’s ignoring the demand by the prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, that he step down from Britain’s upper house.On the Daily Telegraph web site, its editor, Chris Evans, writes that the release of the files “is unlikely to be the end of the matter.” Lord Mandelson is now “set to be called to testify before Congress on what he knows about Epstein’s criminal activities,” Mr. Evans says, and the Telegraph “understands that Lord Mandelson will not return to the Lords either, ending his three-decade long political career.”Mr. Mandelson was exposed in one document from 2003 to have scribbled “my best pal” in a birthday book of greetings for Epstein. Five years later, while Epstein was in prison in Florida for soliciting underage women, Mr. Mandelson wrote, in support of his early release from prison, that he thought “the world” of Epstein.That same year, 2008, while another Labour leader was prime minister, Ambassador Mandelson was named a Lord in recognition of his years of service on British cabinets and in parliament. He has been dismissed from government several times, only to rise again, most recently when Sir Keir named him ambassador to Washington. The new flood of docs mentioning Lord Mandelson was too much for Sir Keir, who had already let him go in September as ambassador to Washington when his name first came up in the Epstein files. The prime minister let it be known, through a spokesman, that Lord Mandelson should no longer be in the House of Lords, but only the Lords can fire a member, an unlikely eventuality.Mr. Mandalson may face a criminal investigation if claims that he leaked material to Epstein are believed valid. Emails culled from the latest dump show Mr. Mandelson apparently letting Epstein know a day in advance of a 500 billion bailout to save the Euro in 2010.The leader of the fast-rising Reform Party, led by Nigel Farage in a strong challenge to the Conservative Party, seized upon the claim, demanding a full investigation. A police spokesperson said the issue, including the emails, would “be reviewed to determine if they meet the criminal threshold for investigation.”The latest disclosures also include a photo of Mr. Mandelson in black T shirt and white underwear. He is showing what may have been a photograph to a young woman in a white bath robe, her face blacked out to hide her identity.Mr. Mandelson couched his resignation from the Labour Party in an apology. He said that he was “sorry for ever having known” Epstein and apologized “to the women and girls whose voices should have been heard long before now,” according to BBC.
