The vintage dishware retailer Fishs Eddy is set to close both its uptown stores later this month and will open new outlets at two Gracious Home stores in March.
The retailer’s lease was not renewed last year at its Upper West Side store at 77th Street and Broadway. The company then decided to close a store on the East Side as well.
The founder and owner of the chain, Julie Gaines, says the new arrangement is “a perfect marriage.” She said, “Gracious Home is a very New York brand, and so are we. These guys are our mentors so I’m beside myself.”
A vice president of Gracious Home, Ken Mesnik, said the situation was a win for all and describes the partnership as long-term. “We saw it as an opportunity to grow together,” he said.
Fishs Eddy will have a presence in two Gracious Home stores, at 1992 Broadway and 67th Street and 1220 Third Ave. at 70th Street. It plans to keep its flagship downtown store at 889 Broadway and the newly opened Brooklyn store on Montague Street.
Ms. Gaines met the owner of Gracious Home, Natan Wekselbaum, through a charity association two years ago. When she learned her lease would not be renewed, the two reached a deal to collaborate.
