News Corp.’s New York Post is in talks with Mortimer Zuckerman’s New York Daily News to combine printing and distribution operations, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said. The discussions are preliminary and are centered on getting savings out of merging back-office functions, said the person, who declined to be identified because the talks aren’t public.
A partnership would marry two tabloids that have competed for decades with eye-catching headlines and exclusive local stories. The newspapers are now looking for ways to lower operating costs after circulation dropped and industry advertising sales slid 14% in the first quarter.
The Post is in separate talks with News Corp.’s Wall Street Journal to combine home delivery to lower costs, the chairman of the public relations firm Rubenstein Communications Inc., Howard Rubenstein, said. He spoke on behalf of all three newspapers.
