NEED FOR SPEED
Paintings and works on paper by Julie Speed go on display today in the artist’s first solo show in New York in almost 15 years. Ms. Speed uses Renaissance and neoclassical techniques in her traditional oil paintings. Some of the artworks provide a humorous view of revered art-history figures such as Cezanne, Goya, and Russian “Suprematist” pioneer Kasimir Malevich. Despite Ms. Speed’s classical leanings, she has her hand in pop culture, too: Johnny Depp and guitarist Jimmie Vaughn are among those who own her artwork, and singersongwriter Shawn Colvin named her Grammy Award-winning album “A Few Small Repairs” (1996) after a painting by Ms. Speed, which she used to illustrate the album’s cover. Opening reception: Tonight, 6-8 p.m. Exhibit: Tonight through Saturday, May 7, Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Gerald Peters Gallery, 24 E. 78th St. at Madison Avenue, 212-628-9760, free.
