CAN DO
The new-music organization Bang on a Can honors the president of Nonesuch Records, Bob Hurwitz,at its annual dinner benefit. Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields, pianist Brad Mehldau, and the Bang on a Can All-Stars provide music. SWEET STUFF
“La Dolce Vita” is the theme of this year’s TriBeCa Ball. Fittingly, Dolce & Gabbana designed the decor at the gala downtown dinner. Eileen Guggenheim and Russell Wilkinson are the evening’s honorary chairmen. The party is a benefit for the New York Academy of Art, a graduate school devoted to teaching figurative painting, sculpture, and drawing. V DAY
The head coach of the Duke University basketball team, Mike Krzyzewski, gives the keynote speech at a benefit that celebrates the memory of coach and commentator Jim Valvano. Mayor Giuliani, a cancer survivor, is the guest of honor. Proceeds go to the V Foundation for Cancer Research, founded in Valvano’s memory and led by his brother, Nick.
