PILLS AND OTHER OBJECTS Victoria Roberts signs her book “Pills for Cats: Finding Happiness Through Modern Pharmacology” (Simon & Schuster), a silly illustrated guide to feline self-reinvention (Friday, noon). Later in the evening, A.M. Homes signs her short-story collection “The Safety of Objects” (HarperPerennial) and a novel about one of the couples portrayed in it, “Music for Torching” (Rob Weisbach) (Friday, 7 p.m.). FAIRS’ WARES There are more than 250 booths at this weekend’s Harlem Book Fair. Along with the large sale, speakers throughout the day include Gloria Mallette, Ishmael Reed, Amiri Baraka, and Christopher John Farley (Saturday, noon-7 p.m., Lenox Avenue at West 135th Street, most events free. Proceeds go to the nonprofit organization Books Through Bars, which distributes literature in prisons. Participants in panels taking place throughout the day include Walter Mosley, Amy Goodman, and Eric Waters (Sunday, noon-5:30 p.m., Pier 63 at West 23rd Street, donation of one book requested).
FOOLISH GAMES Sportswriter Dave Zirin reads from and signs “What’s My Name, Fool? Sports and Resistance in the United States” (Haymarket Books).The book is a political look at American sports, from the integration of major league baseball to what the labor movement can learn from sports unions.
