WHITMAN SAMPLER
Several events are scheduled on the opening weekend of the exhibit “Walt Whitman and the Promise of America 1855-2005.” Activities include a poetry reading at the site of the Rome Printing Company in Brooklyn followed by a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (Saturday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., free), a tour of Whitman’s favorite hangouts in Lower Manhattan (Sunday, 1-3 p.m., $12 general, $10 museum members), and a sail on the 1885 schooner Pioneer, which includes a recitation of Whitman’s classic poem “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” (Sunday, 4-6 p.m., 212-748-8786, $35 general, $30 students and seniors, $25 children ages 12 and under). Exhibit: Through December, daily, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., South Street Seaport Museum, Schermerhorn Row Galleries, 12 Fulton St. at Front Street, 212-748-8600, $8 general, $6 seniors and students, $4 children ages 5-12, free for children under 5.
