SOUTHPAW SOUNDS
Minneapolis singersongwriter Mason Jennings headlines at Southpaw (tonight, 8 p.m. doors open, $15). Next week, emerging indie-folk favorite M. PSICHE-OLOGY
The weekly music series “Midtown Concerts” presents an afternoon concert by the New York Continuo Collective, which focuses on early Baroque music. The group performs excerpts from the opera “Psiche” by Alessandro Leardini, which was performed only once in 1649 in Mantua. MIXED-UP ZAPPA
The Ed Palermo Big Band plays the music of Frank Zappa using traditional big-band instruments to reinterpret Zappa’s large canon of kooky songs. Starting in June, the band will play the Zappa program every week. Wednesdays, April 6 and April 20, 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., Iridium Jazz Club, 1650 Broadway at 51st Street, 212-582-2121, $22.50 general, $10 minimum at tables, $5 minimum at the bar, half price for students at the door.
CONTEMPORARY MUSIC
The American Contemporary Music Ensemble performs a program of works by three New York composers, Elliott Carter, Nico Muhly, and Ryan Streber. Clarinetist Carol McGonnell also performs a short work by the avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen.
