TERRORISM IN AMERICA AND SPAIN
The New School and the Center of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona present a two-day symposium comparing the impacts of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and March 11, 2004. The investigating judge for the Spanish National Court, Baltasar Garzon, talks with the president of the New School, Bob Kerrey,about “The Meaning of Terrorism” (Friday, 10 a.m.). A researcher of psychological reactions to the events of September 11, William Hirst, participates in a panel discussion with the founder and director of el Pais, Juan Luis Cebrian, about social reactions to terrorism (Sat urday, 10 a.m.). UNDERGROUND BRAVERY
American spelunker Chris Nicola spent a decade researching the stories of Ukrainian Jews who survived the Holocaust by living in underground caves. They lived in the dark for almost a year, battling isolation, sensory deprivation, and the threat of starvation. When they emerged, they barely recognized one another in daylight. Mr. Nicola discusses their remarkable story at an event presented by the Explorers Club.
