Cost of Change: PGA Tour Cuts 56 Jobs Amid Shift to For-Profit Era

The PGA Tour’s move into a new era as a for-profit business is costing people their jobs. Though an estimated 30 different new roles will be created within the company, 56 current full-time staff members have been told they’re being laid off.First reported by Sports Business Journal, the PGA Tour laid off about four percent of its global workforce of 1,300 on Thursday as the organization’s new CEO, Brian Rolapp, begins restructuring. In addition to the job cuts, another 73 job vacancies that had been posted as open will not be filled.Mr. Rolapp reportedly sent a memo to staff calling the moves a “difficult, but important, step.”A business consulting firm reviewed the size and structure of the PGA Tour in preparation for its move to a for-profit entity. The shift from its long-time non-profit status came after an infusion of private equity funds led to higher prize money. The Cadillac Classic set for next week at Trump National Doral outside of Miami is among the $20 million Signature Events funded by the influx of private equity cash.Now the tour is going through a belt-tightening phase to cut costs and improve the profit margin. “Here comes the cost cutting exercise from Private Equity funding,” veteran Tour player Ian Poulter posted on X. While the bulk of the PGA Tour workforce is based in Ponte Vedra, Fla., it was unclear who specifically is being let go. Mr. Rolapp, who took over in August, will reportedly meet with staff next month to outline his vision for the PGA Tour and its 30 new roles.Strategic Sports Group invested $1.5 billion in the tour more than two years ago, creating the for-profit PGA Tour Enterprises entity. The PGA Tour has retained a non-profit entity for charity purposes, but SSG holds the option to invest another $1.5 billion in 2027.The PGA Tour has already streamlined its schedule, eliminating events in Hawaii for the first time since 1965. The Sentry and Sony Open in Hawaii have been the traditional season-opening tournament for several years.Finances are the topic of many discussions in golf these days with LIV Golf’s future uncertain amid reports Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is set to withdraw funding at the end of this season.Mr. Rolapp recently praised the competition that LIV Golf provided for exposing where the PGA Tour needed to improve in terms of operation, prize money, and fan entertainment.The $20 million Signature Events series was created in direct response to the size of the prize funds on LIV Golf. Yet, it seems that neither tour can sustain such huge outlays as title sponsors are finding it difficult to keep up with the increasing prize money that they are required to cover.
