Despite Protests, Rainbow Flags Will Fly Inside Seattle Stadium During High-Stakes Game Between Two Anti-LGBTQ+ Nations

Pride flags will fly inside Seattle Stadium on Friday during a high-stakes match between Iran and Egypt, two of the most anti-LGBTQ+ nations in the world.Iran can advance to the knockout round for the first time in its World Cup history with a win, but much of the pre-match discussion has centered around whether the Pride flag can be waved inside the stadium during the game.Despite repeated protests from Iran and Egypt, FIFA will allow Pride flags to be waved inside the stadium during the match. FIFA views such flags as a statement of human rights.“We anticipate a lot of rainbow flags in the stadium and T-shirts with rainbow flags on them,” Hedda McLendon of Seattle’s World Cup organizing committee, told Reuters. “Let’s welcome people to Seattle. It’s the World Cup and let’s show them how we Pride. It’s not a day. It’s not a weekend here. It’s a month.”It’s also a chance for Iran to make history. It has never reached the knockout round in six previous World Cup appearances. A draw with Egypt could still be good enough depending on the standings of the tournament’s other third-place teams. Following the expansion to 48 teams from 32, this year’s tournament is the first time third-place teams can advance to the expanded 32-team knockout round.Egypt, a lock to reach the knockout round, leads Group G with one win and a draw worth four points, while Iran and Belgium have two points after drawing both of their previous matches. New Zealand has one point after a loss and a draw.The matchup is pure coincidence. Seattle has long embraced its reputation as a city that welcomes inclusivity. Pride flags are visible year-round all over the city and the annual June Pride Weekend is one of the largest LGBTQ+ celebrations in America.It was entirely in character that when the city was designated as a host city for the 2026 World Cup, Seattle’s host committee sought to fuse the global tournament with the city’s progressive identity.Before the tournament draw was held last December, local organizers designated the Group G match scheduled for June 26 as the first-ever “Pride Match.”Then the draw was held and the committee’s vision of inclusion collided with a geopolitical reality when Iran and Egypt were bracketed for Seattle.Since then, Egypt’s Football Association has urged FIFA to prevent any Pride-related activities from taking place in the stadium stating such events clash with the mostly Muslim country’s cultural and religious values. Iran, where same-sex relations can carry the death penalty, also filed an objection with FIFA.Despite the protests of the two teams involved, the Pride Match designation will proceed as planned.“The World Cup is going to come and go in three weeks,” Ms. McLendon said. “The Pride celebration has happened on this weekend for 50-plus years. It’s going to happen this weekend. It’s going to happen long after the World Cup.”Seattle’s LGBTQ+ community hopes the designated Pride Match would be an opportunity to promote acceptance at one of the world’s biggest sporting events. Rainbow flags are expected to be waved throughout the stadium.A member of Seattle’s LGBTQ+ Commission, Andrew Ashiofu, told the Associated Press the flags will send a “message” to Iran and Egypt that “we are a free city, we are a welcoming city who celebrates everyone, every race, every sexual orientation, every gender identity.”State Senator Jamie Pederson, who is one of several openly gay members of the Washington State Legislature, said it’s “highly appropriate” the match features countries where homosexuality is not welcome.“If you tried to import a pride celebration into Egypt or Iran, obviously that could be a disaster,” he said, according to the AP. “But in a community like Seattle that prides itself on welcoming people from all over, I just can’t imagine that it’s going to be a significant problem.”It’s a problem for Egypt, which said it “categorically rejects holding any activities relating to supporting (homosexuality) during the match.” Iran argued that only officially recognized national flags should be displayed during matches.Meanwhile, gay rights activist Peter Tachell reportedly wrote a letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, urging the suspension of 11 teams that will not permit a gay player to be on their teams. The list includes Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, Senegal, Qatar, Tunisia, Morocco, Iraq, Uzbekistan, and Algeria.Mr. Tachell contends such discrimination goes against FIFA prohibiting sexuality-based discrimination.
