Five years ago, under pressure from Senators Grassley and Santorum and Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the Ford Foundation adopted new standards for grantees. It did so after a series of articles published by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency found that the New York-based charity founded on the fortune of Henry Ford, whose own world view was infamously anti-Semitic, had been channeling money to the enemies of Israel. The original news had been brought in by the Jewish Forward in the late 1990s, in a dispatch written by the journalist who is now managing editor of The New York Sun. The dispatch, dated June 18, 1999, ran under a headline that referenced the views of the Ford Motor founder and said, “Latest Ford Foundation Grantees Would Sure Make Henry I Proud.”

Now the JTA is out with a new series reporting that, guidelines notwithstanding, Ford Foundation grantees have again been demonizing Israel with unfounded charges of apartheid and have even called for a boycott of the Jewish state. Senator Santorum is no longer in the Senate, and the JTA indicates that Mr. Nadler is taking a powder this time around. So it appears to be up to Senator Grassley to make sure that the foundation’s new president, Luis Ubinas, follows up on the promises made by his predecessor. As we wrote in an editorial issued five years ago, “someone will need to keep an eye out for how well they follow through on this pledge.”
