Zum Schneider, the East Village Bavarian biergarten and restaurant, is currently facing an eviction notice: At its court proceeding tomorrow, the restaurant will ask for a six-month injunction against its landlord to build a case against the eviction. While loyal patrons await further news, it might be worth their while to keep eating and drinking. Since summer 2000, when the restaurant first opened, the food has improved greatly, thanks to the addition of chef Jake Wolf in 2001. Besides the usual Weisswursts and Wiener schnitzel, the menu offers a number of vegetarian and carbladen goodies including schwammerlragout ($12), a bread dumpling in a creamy mushroom sauce, and kasespatzle ($12), a tasty and filling mixture of spatzle with melted cheese, sauteed sweet onions, and an optional addition of thick-cut bacon. Portions are close to enormous, so happy eaters can enjoy the spatzle with a couple of rounds of the various German beers that Zum Schneider offers – a large Weihenstephaner wheat beer was strong enough to stand up to the cheesy spatzle, but was also light and refreshing enough to match with the kaiserschmarrn, a fruit pancake served with applesauce. Let’s hope Zum Schneider doesn’t disappear anytime soon. Customers can sign a petition online at www.zumschneider.com, or at the restaurant itself while enjoying another round.
