SYDNEY, Australia — A portrait attributed to Vincent van Gogh for more than 70 years was not painted by the Dutch master, an Australian gallery said. The origin of “Head of a Man,” which has been in the National Gallery of Victoria’s collection since 1940, was questioned by art critics in Britain last year, prompting analysis of the work at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The painting was valued at more than $4 million.

The museum concluded the canvas was painted by an unidentified contemporary of Van Gogh in the 1880s.
