Israel, Palestinian Arabs Trade Fire in Gaza
JERUSALEM — Israeli air and ground attacks killed four Palestinian Arabs yesterday and a rocket launched from the Gaza Strip severely wounded a civilian in southern Israel. Two gunmen belonging to the Islamic Hamas movement died in an airstrike on their car late Monday, the head of emergency services at Gaza’s Shiffa hospital, told reporters. A 31-year-old man and 70-year-old woman were killed by Israeli gunfire in Gaza City yesterday, medics at the hospital said. The airstrike was against militants responsible for the rocket attacks, an Israeli Army spokeswoman said.

Italian Red Cross Workers Kidnapped in Gaza
TEL AVIV, Israel — Two Italians working for the International Committee of the Red Cross were kidnapped yesterday in the Gaza Strip. The two aid workers, Claudio Moroni and Gianmarco Onorato, had arrived from Italy early yesterday and were working on a humanitarian mission in the southern city of Khan Yunis in conjunction with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, a spokesman for the Red Cross said in a telephone call from Jerusalem.

U.N. Releases Report That Shows AIDS Spread
GENEVA, Switzerland — The global HIV epidemic is growing, leaving an estimated 39.5 million people worldwide infected with the deadly virus, the United Nations said yesterday. AIDS has claimed 2.9 million lives this year and another 4.3 million people became infected with HIV, according to the U.N.’s AIDS epidemic update report, published yesterday. Spread of the disease was most noticeable in East Asia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.

Nepal Declares End To Civil War
DASHARATHPUR, Nepal — Nepal’s political leaders declared a formal end to a decade of bloody civil war yesterday as rebel fighters across the country poured into designated camps in the first stage of the disarmament process. At an emotional ceremony in Kathmandu, the Maoist rebel leader, Prachanda, hailed the agreement as a “miracle” and an example to the world.
