Goebbels’s Weekend Home Goes on Sale for $2.6 Million

The weekend home where Adolf Hitler’s propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, wrote speeches addressing “The Jewish Problem” is being put up for sale for $2.6 million.
The Berlin council, which is so short of funds that it has considered shutting its opera house, has found the $1.5 million annual upkeep of the Bogensee Villa, on the wooded 480-acre Waldhof estate in suburban Berlin, too expensive.
Goebbels and his family used the house as a weekend retreat and to entertain foreign visitors, among them Prime Ministers Chamberlain of Britain and Daladier of France. “It is so romantic. How completely lucky I am,” he said of the place.
Goebbels and his wife, Magda, murdered their children and killed themselves in Hitler’s bunker as the Russian Red Army advanced on Nazi Berlin in 1945, and the house was subsequently turned into a center for the communist Free German Youth League.
The only occupants in recent years have been riot police, drafted in from outside the city ahead of the annual May Day parade.
In the light of the success of neo-Nazi parties in recent elections, the council is vetting prospective buyers. So far, the only parties to express interest have been construction companies and animal breeders.
