Former Navy SEAL and Fitness Guru, 51, Reenlists in Air Force To Chase Unfinished Goal

A retired Navy SEAL, David Goggins, built his reputation on an unrelenting refusal to quit. At age 51, the man widely regarded as one of the toughest endurance athletes and military figures of his generation is testing that identity once more by returning to uniform.Now Master Sergeant Goggins, the bestselling author and motivational speaker recently reenlisted in the United States Air Force, a decade after retiring from the NAVY Seals in 2016. He has been assigned to the Special Warfare Training Wing, according to Air Force officials, where he is believed to be pursuing pararescue training, perhaps the only thing he didn’t master during his previous military career.The pararescue pipeline is among the most demanding in the U.S. military, even for men half his age. It carries an attrition rate of nearly 90 percent and requires nearly two years of training. Candidates must complete a gauntlet of tasks that include Army airborne school, combat dive training, survival school, and advanced medical instruction to qualify as elite rescue specialists capable of operating in the most extreme combat environments.Sergeant Goggins’ decision is rooted in unfinished business. According to his website, he remains the only known service member to complete SEAL training, Army Ranger School and Air Force Tactical Air Controller training. But when he began his military career at age 19 with ambitions of becoming a pararescueman, he struggled to complete the course and was later diagnosed with sickle cell trait. He accepted a medical discharge from the program, a decision that has nagged him for years.Air Force officials confirmed that Sergeant Goggins’ required an age waiver to reenlist, as standard eligibility guidelines for pararescue candidates typically cap enlistment at 42. Beyond that, the service has declined to provide details of his status or progression, citing policies that protect the privacy of trainees.“Given MSgt Goggins’ background, it’s worth noting that the Air Force has welcomed special operators from other services to cross train into Special Warfare for decades,” an Air Force spokeswoman, Ann Stefanek, said in a statement to the Military Times. “Airmen entering the pipeline from sister services must meet the same standard and complete the same rigorous training as all other candidates.”Sergeant Goggins’ path back to the military mirrors the transformation that made him a social media figure. He has often told the story of how he was overweight, disillusioned and searching for direction when he completed his initial enlistment in 1999. After watching a documentary on Navy SEAL training, he lost more than 100 pounds in three months, returned to the military and began Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training.Sergeant Goggins would go on to serve 15 years as a Navy SEAL, earning a reputation for mental and physical toughness that extended beyond the battlefield. In retirement, he built a global following as a motivational speaker, fitness enthusiast and ultramarathoner, attracting 14 million followers to his online platforms based on his dramatic transformation, training techniques and physical endurance.He also wrote a best-selling memoir, “Can’t Hurt Me.”News of his return to the military has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters view it as the latest chapter in a career defined by resilience and the overcoming of long odds. Critics question whether his presence in the pipeline could take a spot from a younger candidate pursuing a long career.Sergeant Goggins is hardly alone in returning to service after stepping away. In recent years, several high profile veterans have re-donned the uniform, including a Medal of Honor recipient, Dakota Meyer, who reenlisted in the Marine Corps in 2025, nearly 15 years after his discharge. The military’s top uniformed officer, General Dan “Razin” Caine, came out of retirement to assume his current post as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.Interestingly, Sergeant Goggins has not been on social media since last November, where his final video read: “Time is running out … you better stop thinking and start … doing.”It appears he’s following his own advice.
