Fury vs. Joshua, a Decade Too Late, Exposes Everything Broken in Modern Boxing

Tyson Fury and Anthony Johsua took the stage at a lavish press conference in London recently to formally announce their long-awaited heavyweight showdown on Dec. 11 at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.Billed as “the biggest fight of the year” and set for global broadcast on Netflix, the clash between two of Britain’s most prominent former heavyweight champions will undoubtedly draw close to 80,000 live spectators and millions of digital viewers.Yet, beneath the theatrical bravado, the matchup stands as a stark example of the systemic maladies that have eroded professional boxing since the heyday of Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis.Messrs. Fury and Joshua, two British giants, could have and should have met a decade ago when the heavyweight division enjoyed a promising revival. After Mr. Fury dethroned long-reigning king Wladimir Klitschko in late 2015 to capture the IBF, IBO and WBO crowns, and Mr. Joshua seized the then vacant IBF title from Charles Martin in early 2016, the sporting public begged for a unification fight. It harked back to the days when the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world was the single most prestigious title in global athletics.Instead, Mr. Joshua fought everyone else except Mr. Fury, until he was dethroned in a stunning seventh-round technical knockout to massive underdog Andy Ruiz at Madison Square Garden in 2019. Meanwhile, Mr. Fury navigated his way through personal sabbaticals and promotional issues. Fast forward a decade and the two finally meet well past their prime in what essentially is a non-title fight.Mr. Joshua, 36, carries a record of 30-4 with 27 knockouts, while Mr. Fury, 38, enters 36-2-1 with 25 knockouts. Neither holds a legitimate championship belt. In fact, Mr. Joshua’s most significant win of late came in a six-round knockout of YouTuber Jake Paul in 2025.Mr. Fury, meanwhile, has won two confidence-building bouts against lightly regarded opponents, Arslanbek Makhmudov and Mariusz Wach, after losing back-to-back title bouts against Oleksander Usyk, the undisputed, unbeaten champion from Ukraine.“We’re here to fight, and fight we will,” Mr. Fury said in London. “I look forward to the challenge. It’s been 10 years in the making. We’ve both had our ups and downs, and finally we arrive at this moment. I’m 38, A.J. will be 37 soon. People say is it too late? Is it? It’s the icing on the cake of two great careers, to throw down in front of 80,000 people, and may the best man win. Let’s go out swinging.”While thousands upon thousands will pack Principality Stadium, and Netflix will attract millions of subscribers, the match highlights boxing’s gravitation toward delayed gratification.Avoiding Prime Time PugilismThe failure of champions not meeting in their prime is one of the reasons why boxing has lost its mainstream status over the past 30 years. Long gone are the golden days of the “Four Kings” when Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvelous Marvin Hagler fought regularly against the best competition. The competitive urgency extended through the 1990s and 2000s when stars like Roy Jones, Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins fought frequently against top-ranked foes. The heavyweight division, which ruled boxing in the era of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Larry Holmes, was later energized with the emergence of Messrs. Tyson, Holyfield, and Lewis and the occasional upset by Buster Douglas, over Mr. Tyson and Hasim Rahman over Mr. Lewis.Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson fight for the WBA World Heavyweight Title on June 28, 1997 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Via Focus on Sport/Getty ImagesIn contrast, the modern era pioneered the art of the deliberate stall and protracted negotiation behind the premise of building up a fight. It took Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao more than five years to finally agree to face each other in 2015, delivering a technical contest well after both fighters had lost their explosive physical peaks. The slow roll continued with Terence Crawford and Errol Spence, who spent years negotiating before finally squaring off in 2023, and for years boxing fans clamored for a fading Canelo Alvarez to fight current superstar David Benavidez.“Now you see guys waiting until the end of their career to make the biggest fight,” Dan Rafael, a long-time boxing writer, told the Sun. “It’s almost like a cash out fight. It’s never a good thing, if you make your public wait. There’s a fine line between marinating a fight and letting it go past its sell by date.”Multiple Media MadnessNetflix subscribers can view the bout at no additional cost, unique for a big-time fight these days. Still the current broadcast model has hurt the sport. Boxing flourished when it was viewed on free network television decades ago, and later on basic cable staples like HBO and Showtime. Today, both premium giants have closed their sports departments, leaving boxing coverage fractured across multiple subscription services such as DAZN, Paramount+, Prime Video and standalone Pay-Per-View platforms. Promoters, aligned with the same media outlets, routinely wage war over calendar dates and corporate budgets. Pre-fight research is needed to find where to view a bout and how much it will cost. “There was a time you could find a boxing match by accident,” Mr. Rafael said. “You’d be turning the channel and suddenly it was on. That’s how I became a boxing fan. But nobody’s going to find a boxing match on DAZN by accident because you have to go through apps and paywalls. How can you create new fans when you can’t get through the front door?”Promoters fight harder than boxersInfighting between promoters these days has made the rivalry between Don King and Bob Arum back in the 1970s and 1980s seem mild. The narrative leading up to the Fury-Joshua press conference was dominated by promotional politics regarding whether UFC boss Dana White would be permitted to attend. Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn was adamant that Mr. White, a partner in Zuffa Boxing, could not attend and wouldn’t have a major role in the promotion.Boxer Pat Brown (black & white shorts) celebrates a victory with Chairman of Matchroom Boxing Eddie Hearn on July 5, 2025 in Manchester, England. Yet, during his opening remarks, Mr. Alalshikh pointedly acknowledged his absent “friend” Mr. White.Zuffa Boxing — in which Mr. Alalshikh holds a substantial stake — has joined a list of boxing promotional companies that include Top Rank, still headed by Mr. Arum, Golden Boy Promotions led by Mr. Del La Hoya, Premier Boxing Champions headed by Al Haymon, and Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions. Each entity guards its own roster and balance sheet, routinely blocking inter-promotional bouts that could elevate the sport as a whole.“They’re all complicit in their own demise,” Mr. Rafael said. “They’ve let the sport flounder for decades.”The Bad Taste of Alphabet SoupCompounding the gridlock is the proliferation of sanctioning bodies and championship belts. The WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO each have their own regular champions, interim champions and even super champions. Add the Ring Magazine championship belt and soon-to-be created Zuffa belts and the multiple titles confuse casual fans and dilute the value of being called a “world champion.”At the Fury-Joshua presser, Mr. Alalshikh stood between the two fighters during the face off holding a Ring Magazine belt. Apparently, the WBA “super” heavyweight title will be on the line as well. In reality, Mr. Usyk (25-0 with 16 knockouts) is the recognized heavyweight champion having beaten Messrs. Joshua and Fury twice each.“They’re making up titles to make these fights sound more legitimate with a so-called belt on the line,” Matthew Aguilar, a Texas Hall of Fame boxing writer, told the Sun. “Boxing has a problem with a proliferation of belts and a proliferation of divisions. Now they just create belts out of thin air and there’s no legacy attached to it.”It’s activity, not mixed martial artsSome might suggest the popularity of mixed martial arts has hurt boxing, but it has been proven that credible boxing matchups will attract a loyal audience if the fights are accessible and affordable.Current stars like Mr. Benavidez, Ryan Garcia, Shakur Stevenson, Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez are all marketable champions with strong social media following and individual brand power. Yet their ring activity is a fraction of what previous generations logged. Messrs. Garcia, Benavidez, and Stevenson have fought just four times each during the last three years, while Mr. Haney has fought three times during that span. Mr. Lopez has battled five times in the three-year span. By comparison, Mr. De La Hoya fought at least twice a year during the last 10 years of his career and as many as five times during a 12-month span in the 1990s.“Today it’s not even close to the same,” Mr. Aguilar said. “If a guy fights twice a year, it’s considered a lot. It’s just a whole different world. There used to be a desire from not only the fighter, but also the promoter and the networks to keep these guys active for the fanbase, and they delivered what fans wanted to see. Today, it’s not so much about the fighters as it is about the spectacle. It’s about ring walks and staredowns.”The cover of Sports Illustrated, May 7 2007. Wikimedia CommonsThe current crisis facing prize fighting has been brewing for years. When Mr. De La Hoya fought Mr. Mayweather in 2007 Sports Illustrated featured the two fighters on its cover under the headline “The Fight to Save Boxing.” Nearly two decades later, the sport remains in dire need of saving, primarily from its own institutional greed, administrative division, and reluctance to give fans the fights they want when they actually want to see them.
