“I never wanted to follow the model of a potter stuck in a garret working over and over again on the same mug,” said Jonathan Adler speaking by phone on Tuesday from High Point, N.C., where he will officially launch a furniture collection today. “I always wanted to design everything for the home.”
Mr. Adler, 38, who is best known for his curvy, playful pottery designs, has been on his way to achieving that goal for some time; he already sells pillows, rugs, lighting, and a few select pieces of furniture at his popular stores in New York, East Hampton, Miami, and Los Angeles, and has done interior design work for several years. This new line of sofas, chairs, and tables, manufactured by Maclean, Va.-based company Rowe Furniture, represents his first comprehensive furniture collection.
Many of Mr. Adler’s pieces are named for favorite movie characters – the Woodhouse Sofa for Mia Farrow’s character in “Rosemary’s Baby,” the Harrington Sofa after “All About Eve,” the Morrow Settee for Doris Day’s Jan Morrow in “Pillow Talk” – and they convey a certain amount of old Hollywood glamour, while still looking comfortable and contemporary. “I want my stuff to be familiar but fresh,” said Mr. Adler, who cited mid-century designer Tommi Parzinger as an influence.
The collection is being unveiled this week at the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, but won’t be available for purchase until the summer. It will be sold in New York at Mr. Adler’s SoHo and new Madison Avenue stores. The sofas, available in a variety of fabrics, are priced between $2,250 and $3,000; chairs range from $950 to $1,500; a lacquered console is $1,125.
