Injuries, Politics, Ebola, and Ticket Madness Shadow World Cup Preparations

With just weeks remaining before the kickoff to the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup, mounting injuries, continued political uncertainty and the emergence of a deadly virus are casting a dark shadow over the upcoming competition. The anxieties plaguing the expanded tournament reached an uncomfortable level on May 24 when global superstar Lionel Messi voluntarily removed himself from a Major League Soccer game in Miami.Mr. Messi, who seldom is subbed out of matches, left in the 73rd minute of Inter Miami’s 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Sunday, the team’s final game before the MLS breaks for the World Cup.Though no preliminary diagnosis was announced, Mr. Messi was seen grabbing his left hamstring before leaving the game where he had two assists. The soccer icon has dealt with hamstring injuries at least two other times during his three years in Miami, raising the level of concern over whether the 38-year-old will be ready next month to help Argentina defend its World Cup title. Mr. Messi has said in the past that would only play in the World Cup if healthy.“I tried to see how he was doing,” Inter Miami teammate Mateo Silvetti told reporters after the match. “I have the same doubt as everyone else.”Argentina opens group stage play on June 16 against Algeria in Kansas City offering three weeks of recovery time though healing from a hamstring injury can be tricky. Mr. Messi already appeared in five World Cups, winning the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player in 2014 and again in 2022 when Argentina defeated France for the title.Accidents Waiting To HappenArgentina isn’t the only team impacted by injuries. Coaches and athletes have repeatedly warned FIFA that the expanded 48-team World Cup structure would push human bodies past their physical limits. This summer’s tournament comes immediately on the heels of a radically expanded UEFA Champions League calendar and FIFA’s new, supersized Club World Cup format. The physical demand of the calendar is evident by the number of players who have already been completely ruled out of the tournament. France suffered a massive blow in April when striker Hugo Ekitike sustained an Achilles injury that requires more than six months of recovery. Spain is sweating over the fitness of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, while several tournament favorites will be missing key stalwarts entirely. Argentia has already lost Joaquin Panichelli to an ACL tear, while Brazil will be without two players, Eder Militao and Rodrygo Silva de Goes. England will be without Ben White while the United States lost Cameron Carter-Vickers and Patrick Agyemange due to Achilles injuries. Before Mr. Messi walked off the field, Argentina’s manager Lionel Scaloni tried to remain unfazed by the growing list of medical concerns and the immense expectations of a demanding public back in Buenos Aires.“We’re doing well, we’re eager,” Mr. Scaloni told the Associated Press. “We’re aware that our opponents will play us differently because we’re the reigning champions. The important thing is that we’ll be there. After that, it’s football, and anything can happen.”The world will watch anxiously to see if Mr. Messi will be out there with him. Beyond those officially sidelined, a high-profile “watchlist” of compromised stars dominates the pre-tournament landscape. Canada’s Alphonso Davies injured his hamstring during Bayern Munich’s Champions League semifinal defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi is battling a right thigh strain, and Algeria’s goalkeeper Luca Zidane is highly doubtful after a violent on-field facial collision.Even the United States men’s national team is facing a crisis of stability; midfielder Johnny Cardoso sprained his right ankle while training with Atletico Madrid, and center-back Chris Richards tore ankle ligaments playing for Crystal Palace.Health Crisis Alters DR Congo’s DreamsMeanwhile, the Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a humanitarian crisis that has completely disrupted its historic return to the world stage. Preparing for its first World Cup appearance since competing as Zaire in 1974, the Congolese squad was forced to completely cancel its domestic pre-tournament training camp in the capital of Kinshasa due to an accelerating Ebola outbreak in the eastern provinces. According to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on May 24, the situation is evolving rapidly. The DRC has reported 746 suspected Ebola cases, 83 confirmed cases, and 176 suspected deaths. The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially classified the outbreak as a “public health emergency of international concern.” The outbreak is driven by the rare Bundibugyo species of the virus, for which no current vaccine exists. The WHO estimates a functional vaccine could take up to nine months to manifest. The medical emergency quickly triggered strict geopolitical realities. The United States public health agencies implemented a mandatory rule barring entry to any non-American citizens who have been inside the DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan within the previous 21 days. To circumvent this, the DR Congo football federation moved its training operations entirely to Europe. Because all of the Leopards’ rostered players play professionally for clubs outside of Africa, the players themselves will bypass the 21-day quarantine restriction. Congolese journalists, delegates, and supporters could be left out. The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa paused all standard visa processing operations in light of the outbreak, leaving hundreds of fans and media personnel who applied through the ministry of sport stranded without documentation just weeks before their June 17 opener against Portugal in Houston. Iran Moves Training from Tucson to MexicoFIFA is hoping allowing Iran to relocate its training base from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico, will ease political tensions entering the World Cup. The relocation comes amid security anxieties and diplomatic friction surrounding the ongoing military conflict in the Middle East, which escalated dramatically following the February 28 airstrikes launched by Israel and the United States against Iranian targets. While the team was training in southern Turkey, players were forced to make logistically grueling visits to the U.S. and Canadian embassies in Ankara simply to navigate the visa application process. The move to Tijuana — situated directly south of San Diego — places Iran just a short transit away from their Group G matches in Inglewood, California, and Seattle, Washington. Iranian soccer officials noted that entering the United States via the Mexican border minimizes administrative visa friction, stating that the squad may even utilize direct Iran Air flights to travel back and forth across the border between matches. The relocation underlines the severe diplomatic tightrope of the tournament. In March, President Donald Trump remarked publicly that while the Iranian athletic contingent would be legally welcomed to compete, the United States government could not guarantee their safety. In response to the rhetoric, Los Angeles Host Committee President Kathryn Schloessman confirmed that Southern California municipal agencies will implement unprecedented, specialized security protocols surrounding Team Melli’s matches against New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21. New York Mayor Scores $50 ticketsA lottery system covering a window from May 25 to May 30 will determine which fortunate New Yorkers received a $50 ticket to the World cup.Amid the political maneuvering and medical dramas, the cost of World Cup tickets continues to be a topic of controversy with seats for the finals going as high as $32,000. But New York City Mayor Zohran Mandani announced a partnership with the New York/New Jersey Host Committee to secure 1,000 World Cup tickets, affordable to working-class city residents. The subsidized tickets will cost exactly $50. “To put that in perspective, that’s five lattes in New York,” Mr. Mandani said. “We want to open the tournament to working people who couldn’t otherwise afford it.”The 1,000 secured tickets will be distributed in precise batches of 150, covering the five highly anticipated group-stage matches and two high-stakes knockout rounds scheduled for MetLife Stadium. In an effort to make the experience completely cost-free, the municipal initiative will also provide all lottery winners with free round-trip bus transportation directly to the stadium gates in East Rutherford. Costs for Tickets and Hotels Impacting Demand The ticketing and hospitality markets continue to experience a disconnect. While ticket prices and hotel rates skyrocket, demand is heavily underperforming. According to Newsweek, thousands of tickets remain unsold across the 16 U.S. host cities. Though much of the remaining inventory is concentrated in lower demand matches, the sluggish markets have caused resale prices to fall sharply. Tickets for group-stage matches have plummeted below $100 with games still showing more than 1,000 seats available, Newsweek said. The soft demand is mirrored by the hospitality sector where hotel bookings continue to run well below forecasts. A recent survey by the American Hotel and Lodging Association found 80 percent of bookings are tracking under initial projections. Inflated prices haven’t helped. A report by FCM Consulting indicated the average nightly rate across all host markets is $499 per night, an increase from the average rate of $438 recorded before the tournament was announced. On match night, the average climbs to $524 compared to $398 on non-game nights. Boston has the highest average nightly rate of $611 with New York/New Jersey averaging $593. Houston is more affordable, averaging just $205. Across the entire tournament, Vancouver is the most expensive host city with average rates nearly $890 per night. The rate is impacted by the city’s tight hotel supply of only 22,700 rooms.Mexico’s host cities implemented the steepest percentage hikes with Guadalajara going from $90 last summer to $511 for the World Cup. In an effort to stimulate international travel and lift lagging attendance, the U.S. State Department is easing travel restrictions. The government has waived a requirement forcing visa applicants from 50 countries to pay at $15,000 deposit to enter the country, provided they hold a valid tournament match ticket.
