Luigi Mangione Musical Sells Out in New York — and Adds Extra Dates

A new musical based on the life of Luigi Mangione, who is accused of gunning down the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, that is being staged in New York City in June, has added extra performance dates after the first show sold out, shortly after its announcement.“Luigi: The Musical” will be staged at The Green Room 42 in Midtown West, not far from where UnitedHealthcare CEO Bryan Thompson was murdered on a midtown Manhattan street in December 2024. The first staged reading of the show, which originally premiered in San Francisco last year, on June 15 has already sold out. The Green Room 42 website is listing tickets for sale for performances on June 17 and June 18 with tickets selling from $29 to “ringside” seats for $79.“Luigi: The Musical” will be staged in New York the same month that Mr. Mangione, 27, will face a state murder trial. He is presently residing in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center.The show, which was also staged at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival following its sellout run in San Francisco, has been criticized for rushing to exploit a real-life tragedy while the alleged murderer is awaiting sentence.In addition to receiving negative notices from theater critics in San Francisco, politicians have accused the musical, written by Arielle Johnson and Nova Bradford, of being in poor taste. “This is disgusting. Going to do one about [Jeffrey] Dahmer next?” Republican New Hampshire state representative James Spillane commented, according to the New York Post.The high demand for “Luigi: the Musical” follows the recent success of another offbeat show inspired by news events, “Gwyneth Goes Skiing,” a musical inspired by actress Gwyneth Paltrow’s legal fight with optician Terry Sanderson following a ski collision at a resort in Utah, which enjoyed sell-out runs in New York and London.‘Luigi: the Musical.’ A statement on the venue’s website stated the musical is “inspired by the bizarre true story of three high-profile inmates (Luigi Mangione, Diddy and Sam Bankman Fried) who were all held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn at the same time. “Luigi: the Musical” is a dark comedic musical which has evoked a resounding, viral response since its announcement, inspiring profound journalistic features in the New York Times, NPR “All Things Considered,” and Washington Post to name just a few.” “What began as an idea scribbled on a napkin at the SF Eagle [a San Francisco gay bar] has become one of the year’s most talked-about independent theater debuts with coverage from Stephen Colbert, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Independent and many more.”Luigi Mangione. Beneath the absurdity and punchlines lies a serious critique of how violence is packaged, sold, and consumed in American media.” Mr. Mangione is being prosecuted in three separate jurisdictions for crimes relating to the killing of Thompson: In Pennsylvania state court, where he was arrested, in New York state court, and in federal court at the Southern District of New York, where federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Mr. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
