Mamdani at 100 Days: Mayor Touts ‘Pothole Politics’ While Bigger Promises Languish

Mayor Zohran Mamdani, celebrating his 100th day in office on Sunday, touted his administration’s commitment to fixing the city’s smaller, overlooked problems — a philosophy he calls “pothole politics.” But where the 34-year-old Democratic socialist stands on his larger campaign promises is another matter. The invitation-only rally drew some one thousand supporters to Knockdown Center in Maspeth, Queens, on Sunday night for a quintessentially Mamdani bash. Guests, gifted signs with slogans like “childcare for all” and “NYC groceries,” could explore a makeshift “museum” with artifacts referencing some of the administration’s key accomplishments — among them a map of city child care centers, which Mr. Mamdani is working to provide free programs for city families.Another exhibit featured a crumpled Taco Bell bag and a Baja Blast from his mukbang-style lunch with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection commissioner, where they discussed fast food worker rights.The evening also featured a special appearance from one of Mr. Mamdani’s biggest cheerleaders and fellow democratic socialist, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who took the stage to sing the mayor’s praises. “What you guys are doing here is telling the world that we can have a government that works for all of us, not just the oligarchs,” Mr. Sanders said. He also lauded Mr. Mamdani for being the first public official he’s partnered with who speaks “proudly about democratic socialism.”Mr. Mamdani’s socialist proclivities were a major theme during the night, with the mayor insisting that he was “elected as a Democratic socialist, and I will govern as a Democratic socialist.” Also on full display was his populism, with the mayor emphasizing his administration’s commitment to improving the lives of everyday New Yorkers. “Nothing is too big for New York City to take on,” Mr. Mamdani said. “And over the past 14 weeks, we have proved that there is no task too small, either.”Dubbing his ground-up governing philosophy “pothole politics,” Mr. Mamdani reasoned that if the “government can’t do the small things, how could you ever trust it to do the big ones? How can we promise to transform our city if we can’t pave your street?”While the mayor celebrated his smaller successes at length, he avoided addressing several key campaign promises that have yet to come to fruition.Fast and Free Buses? Mr. Mamdani’s pledge to provide fast and free buses to the city was a hallmark of his mayoral campaign. While the city already subsidizes buses and subway fares for many low-income residents, Mr. Mamdani sought to benefit working New Yorkers by permanently eliminating fares for all bus riders — and, in an additional challenge, vowed to make them faster, too.A hundred days in, little progress has been made on that front. Mr. Mamdani has yet to secure the state funds needed to cover the estimated $700 million project, and last week he conceded to Politico that he was unlikely to deliver on that commitment in 2026. While he insisted he is “absolutely committed to making buses fast and free,” Mr. Mamdani suggested his immediate focus was on negotiations between Governor Hochul and state legislators over a free bus pilot program.At Sunday’s rally, however, Mr. Mamdani quietly pared down his trademark promise to focus only on the “fast” part of his plan. He unveiled the Department of Transportation’s plans to speed up commute times for bus riders across the city by 20 percent. “In a city where every minute counts, where time is money, it is unacceptable that some buses run as slow as five miles an hour,” Mr. Mamdani said. “That is why, on the campaign, I promised to make buses faster, and it’s why tonight, I am so excited to share that we will cut down commutes by up to six minutes each way.”Freezing the Rent Mr. Mamdani’s vow to freeze the monthly cost of the city’s estimated one million rent-stabilized apartments is another core campaign pledge that remains unfulfilled. A critical vote will come in May or June, when the nine-person panel that sets annual rental increases, the Rent Guidelines Board, will decide whether to implement a freeze.Mr. Mamdani has pushed the odds in his favor by appointing six like-minded members to the board — helped along by the early resignations of several Adams-era holdovers whose terms had not yet expired.The mayor has also faced early setbacks in his broader housing agenda. His effort to block the sale of 5,200 rent-stabilized units ended when a federal judge rebuffed City Hall’s intervention, allowing the sale to proceed despite the administration’s efforts to “protect tenants from further neglect and displacement.”Child Care for AllThe mayor has seen more progress in his bid to provide affordable child care to New York families than on his other major campaign programs, though much work remains. Mr. Mamdani achieved a significant milestone in January when Governor Hochul committed to funding two years of free child care for the city’s two-year-olds. The $1.2 billion program, beginning this fall, will initially serve 2,000 children before expanding to 12,000 in its second year. Its long-term future remains uncertain, as the deal covers only two years of funding.The initiative has also come under scrutiny over Mr. Mamdani’s decision to recruit a children’s YouTuber turned anti-Israel activist, Rachel Accurso, to star in promotional videos for the program. Critics have accused Ms. Accurso — who is known online as Ms. Rachel — of amplifying Hamas’s inflated casualty figures, repeating claims that Israel indiscriminately bombs children, and dismissing allegations of bias by insisting that “wanting kids to live isn’t antisemitic.” She drew further backlash after she platformed a Palestinian photojournalist who had celebrated Hamas’s October 7 massacre.In December, Ms. Accurso was nominated for “Antisemite of the Year” by a Jewish watchdog group, Stop Antisemitism. The title ultimately went to conservative podcaster, Tucker Carlson. Major Obstacles Ahead Whether Mr. Mamdani can deliver on his ambitious agenda will depend heavily on his ability to raise the funds necessary for his expensive proposals while closing a $5.5 billion budget gap. He initially floated a 9.5 percent property tax increase, but the proposal proved so immediately toxic that he has since retreated, calling it a “path of last resort.” The mayor has also weighed raising income taxes on New Yorkers earning $1 million or more and hiking corporate taxes on financial firms. Business leaders, however, have cautioned against the move, warning that tax hikes would prompt corporations to flee the city.However, the president of the Citizens Budget Commission, Andrew Rein, has urged a different approach: focusing not on raising revenue but on reining in spending. “If we’re smart and do the hard work, you can close this budget gap by reducing spending while preserving critical services,” Mr. Rein told amNewYork. Though the mayor proposes the city’s budget, the final word rests with the City Council, which votes on it. The annual financial plan typically comes together in June before taking effect at the start of July.What Mamdani Didn’t Say While Mr. Mamdani used his 100-day celebration to highlight his administration’s successes, his first three months in office have also been marked by significant controversy — particularly regarding his anti-Israel activism and his relationship with the Jewish community.Mr. Mamdani, who has declined to explicitly affirm Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state and supports the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, raised concerns among Jewish organizations before he was even sworn in. In January, he drew fierce backlash after declining to condemn protesters who surrounded a Manhattan synagogue chanting “Death to the IDF,” suggesting instead that the event inside — which promoted Jewish immigration to Israel — was “in violation of international law.”Following his inauguration, Mr. Mamdani ruffled feathers with his day-one decision to overturn all of Mayor Adams’s executive orders, including ones that had adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism and blocked city officials from boycotting Israel. He also faced reports that his wife, Rama Duwaji, had liked Instagram posts celebrating Hamas’s October 7 attack. Mr. Mamdani defended Ms. Duwaji by insisting that she is a “private person.”The president of United Jewish Teachers, Moshe Spern, attended the rally but came away disappointed. “I attended the event as a Jewish community advocate looking to provide perspective in a room of people that are only showering the mayor with praise,” Mr. Spern tells the Sun. “The reality is that the Mayor didn’t address the Jewish community in his speech or antisemitism despite the growing numbers of incidents, his affordability plan is a grocery store that is at least a year away, and fast but not free buses.”Jews account for an estimated 10 percent of New York City residents, yet antisemitic incidents accounted for 57 percent of hate crimes in 2025, according to NYPD data — placing Jewish New Yorkers as targets of hate crimes more than all other groups combined. Mr. Spern added that Mr. Mamdani provided “promises rather than actions outside of the potholes” and that “last night felt like a campaign rally rather than a night that should’ve been about listening and working to help all New Yorkers.”Despite the criticism, Mr. Mamdani boasts the approval of 48 percent of New Yorkers, with 30 percent disapproving and 23 percent unsure, according to a recent Marist Poll. That figure, however, falls below the 61 percent his predecessor, Mayor Adams, recorded at a comparable point in his tenure.
