Netflix’s Hulk Hogan Documentary Puts Entertainment First, Like Its ‘Real American’ Subject

“Hulk Hogan: Real American,” a four-part docuseries streaming on Netflix, explores the private and public lives of a man, Terry Bollea, wrestling with the price of fame. Like its subject, it puts entertaining the audience first.The four-part docuseries is worth watching for both “Hulkamaniacs” and those who sniff at the staged spectacles. Bollea’s personality was too big to be confined by the ropes of the ring. With an embarrassment of riches as far as video and storylines, the producer, Amy Storkel, and lead editor, Weston Currie, deserve praise for packing in so much. Paying to license 1980s pop hits elevates the experience to a level that stock music couldn’t have achieved.“Hulk Hogan: Real American” was the last appearance on camera for Bollea, who died from a heart attack in 2025. A title card states that the “documentary crew was given unprecedented access,” from home movies to interviews with the 71-year-old Bollea hobbling with a cane months before his death.Hulk Hogan’s image appeared on everything from TV shows and toy chests to supplements and beer. The wrestler-turned-Minnesota governor, Jesse “the Body” Ventura, said that Bollea was “the first ever with merchandising.” Bollea recalled “approving 10-15 new products every week.” Like Ventura, he did some acting as age and injuries caught up with him.Bollea built the World Wrestling Federation into a multimillion-dollar business. After falling out with management, Bollea boosted their “real distant number two” competitor, World Championship Wrestling. At home with his first wife, Linda, and the children of their 24-year union, Brooke and Nick, he’s likened to Superman, whose crest he wore as a tattoo. But intent on serving fans, over time he forgot how to be Clark Kent.The mild-mannered Bollea “hated confrontations” as a poor, overweight boy at Tampa, Florida. He hits rock bottom, putting a gun in his mouth, but rallies yet again, being baptized as Christian a year before his death. “Train, say your prayers, and eat your vitamins,” Hogan often advised, “and you’re gonna get what you want.” But there was a price.As the public mood shifted against steroids, Bollea hurt his reputation by insisting he’d never used them. “The mindset in the 1980s,” he said, was that they “were safer than sugar.” Next, Gawker released a sex tape. Bollea defeated the scurrilous gossip site in court — “a victory,” as this columnist wrote in The New York Sun, for those “who fear having their privacy violated.”Getting caught using a racial slur took years to overcome. Bollea apologized for that and other regrets. The many clips of him being tender with his children and learning-disabled fans show an essential kindness — a rare trait that Terry and Hulk shared.This soft spot for kids led to Bollea injuring the TV host, Richard Belzer, who coaxed him as a guest by saying that seven children in wheelchairs were waiting in studio. None were. Instead, Belzer mocked WrestleMania, demanding a demonstration of moves. Bollea put him in a sleeper hold — and the subsequent lawsuit was settled out of court.‘Hulk Hogan: Real American.’ Via NetflixPresident Trump, who befriended Bollea in his heyday, shared recollections in the Roosevelt Room of the White House. Bollea voted for the president in 2016 and 2020 but was a “coward” and kept quiet. “My Hulkamaniacs,” he said, “have always been Democrats and Republicans.” He risked alienating some only after Mr. Trump was shot.Bollea’s final act was delivering a stemwinder at the 2025 GOP Convention — and shrugging off the resulting death threats. He seemed at peace about the pain that made for a successful life and a compelling documentary. “Terry Bollea,” he said, “was just a human being. But the legend of Hulk Hogan will live forever.”
