New Data Show NFL Is America’s Most Politically Unpredictable Sport

When the next election cycle arrives, political strategists might consider paying closer attention to cultivating the football vote.A new analysis of publicly available voter registration records shows that while the National Football League is a training ground for power, speed and violent collisions, it’s also home to the most politically diverse player base in American professional sports.Compared to the NBA, WNBA, MLB and NHL, NFL players are the least ideologically predictable, a rarity in the sports landscape where other leagues increasingly lean to one side of the political divide.Using the registered voter data from 24 states and Washington D.C., researchers matched 1,506 professional athletes across the five major U.S. sports leagues to voter registration records through public biographical information. The result posted on Votehub.com is the first league-by-league snapshot of political affiliation among American professional athletes. While the four other major American leagues are marked by stark contrasts, the NFL sits almost squarely in the middle with: 34.3 percent Democratic, 44.3 independent and 20.2 percent Republican.By comparison, the WNBA player base is 67.5 percent Democratic, 30.2 percent independent and just 2.3 percent Republican. The NBA is 42.9 percent Democratic, 45.9 percent independent and 10.2 percent Republican. Meanwhile, MLB players register at 53.7 percent Republican, 36.4 percent independent and 7.8 percent Democratic. The NHL shows 43.9 percent Republican, 48.6 percent independent and 5.6 percent Democratic. The disparity in the leagues other than football can be understood. In baseball, about six percent of MLB players are Black, while many Latino players are foreign-born and not voting eligible. Those factors left the sample of 434 voting eligible MLB players to be overwhelmingly white resulting in a heavy Republican lean. The NHL sample included 107 voting-eligible Americans with 47 listed as Republican, six Democrats and 54 independents or third-party. The league remains predominantly white from mid-Western backgrounds and is considered the most culturally conversative of the major sports. The 170 NBA showed 73 Democrats, 76 independents, 17 Republicans and four third-party registrants. The league is predominantly black with a significant number of European players. The WNBA, a league where the majority of the women are black and embraces LGBTQ athletes, is also heavily Democratic. Of the 43 players analyzed, 29 registered as Democrats. The NFL’s diversity stands out. Of the 752 players sampled 258 registered as Democrats, 152 as Republicans 325 as independents and 17 with third parties. No other league comes close to that balance. The numbers reflect the NFL’s broad pipeline. Players come from rural towns and inner cities, wealthy communities and working-class suburbs. All of them attended colleges from all parts of the country. With more than 50 players on each roster, locker rooms are diverse in class, race and culture.Fans often argue that politics should be kept separate from sports and many professional athletes avoid publicly discussing their political beliefs. Yet, sports shape American conversations well beyond the final score.Several NFL stars publicly support the MAGA movement. San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa was once fined for wearing a MAGA hat during a post-game interview. A few months later Mr. Bosa was photographed standing with Mr. Trump at UFC 299 in Miami.Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker publicly supported Mr. Trump, along with retired Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher and former running back Herschel Walker.Meanwhile, Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith, Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson and Hall of Fame legend Alan Page supported Kamala Harris, an HBCU grad, during the presidential election. In an era when politics increasingly permeates every corner of American culture, the NFL has emerged as the rare institution where no single world view holds dominance. For campaign strategists looking for an edge, football locker rooms are not just arenas of competition, but fertile ground for political influence.
