Six New York City public high schools are among the 100 best in the country, according to the new U.S. News & World Report rankings of American high schools being published Friday. All of the listed New York City schools follow a competitive admissions process.
Stuyvesant High School was the top of the city schools, at no. 15, with the Bronx High School of Science close behind at 20. Two other specialized high schools, Staten Island Technical and Brooklyn Tech, were named, as were Townsend Harris High School in Queens and the New Explorations in Science, Technology, and Math high school in Manhattan.
“These are all well-known outstanding schools that attract our highest-performing students. We have many other great schools making outstanding progress,” a spokesman for the Department of Education, David Cantor, said.
To make the list, schools had to show high test scores even among disadvantaged groups and had to demonstrate high participation and performance on Advanced Placement tests.
The developer of the methodology, Andrew Rotherham, the director of the Washington-based think tank Education Sector, pointed out that not all schools on the list are selective, and not all selective schools in the country made the list. Across New York State, 17 high schools made the top 100 list.
