The Department of Education announced it would open 20 small schools next year in addition to the 20 new small high schools announced last month.

Two of the schools will be located at the site of South Shore high school, which is to be phased out along with Samuel J. Tilden High School. The new schools include a school for criminal justice, an arts and media focused school, and the Academy of Social Action. Several of the schools will be affiliated with private groups that help to operate a number of city schools.

The Department has yet to announce the locations of two charter schools and a specialized secondary school that will be affiliated with Columbia University.
