The president of New York City Transit, Lawrence Reuter, announced his resignation yesterday, clearing the way for the new executive director and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Elliot Sander, to make one of his first big appointments.
Mr. Reuter has served as president of the agency that oversees the city’s subways and buses since 1996 and will stay on until early February.
Mr. Sander said the Authority will now begin an executive search for a replacement, and will consider candidates from within the MTA and throughout the nation. Mr. Sander said he would have a better sense of how long the search would take after meeting with consultants. Mr. Sander will ultimately be in charge of the appointment, not the MTA chairman, Peter Kalikow.
Under Mr. Reuter’s tenure, annual subway ridership increased by 31% to 1.45 billion, reaching its highest level since the establishment of the MTA in 1953.
