ALBANY — Roger Kelley is resigning as the president and chief executive officer of the New York Power Authority, effective August 1.

Mr. Kelley’s resignation comes a little more than a year after former Governor Spitzer tapped him to head the agency, which runs the Niagara Falls electric generating station and 17 other power plants in the state. Mr. Spitzer resigned in March after federal authorities said he patronized a high-priced prostitute in Washington.

Mr. Kelley, an electrical engineer with more than 30 years experience in the electric utility industry, replaced Timothy Carey, a longtime ally of Governor Pataki.

Governor Paterson said he will nominate Mr. Kelley to serve on the board of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
