Thirteen-year-old Ysmairi Torres, with her ponytail and plaid school uniform, doesn’t appear to have much in common with Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly — until she opens her mouth.
The eighth grader from Saint Rose Lima School in Washington Heights was named Police Commissioner for a Day yesterday after laying out an anti-illegal gun platform very similar to that of Mr. Kelly and the mayor in an essay contest.
Mr. Kelly beamed after she read aloud her proposals to toughen gun laws and prison sentences, create a national database to track gun sales, and run anti-gun public service announcements aimed at young people during primetime hours.
He even suggested that he would consider implementing some of her policy recommendations. “One I like is the PSAs in the early evening hours,” he said.
