A city police officer has been arrested for his role in a major marijuana distribution ring on Long Island.
Glen Smokler, a 13-year veteran of the force, was among 28 people arrested in the bust.
Suffolk County police seized $250,000 worth of marijuana — more than 100 pounds — and 25 firearms, including two Uzis and two sawed-off shotguns. Authorities also seized $3 million in cash, a fleet of 23 luxury cars, and a 48-foot yacht.
Police said they made 28 simultaneous, coordinated raids yesterday across Suffolk County, and also in Nassau County and in Rutland, near the Canadian border. According to published reports, the ring smuggled marijuana to Long Island from Canada.
Police said the ringleader is Aldrin Borrell, 34, of Coram, where Officer Smokler also lived. New York City police officials said the NYPD internal affairs bureau helped with the investigation and that Officer Smokler has been suspended.
He faces drug possession charges and a charge of conspiracy.
The other 27 people allegedly involved in the scheme, who range in from 19 to 53, also face conspiracy and possession charges.
Officer Smokler could not be reached for comment.
