As New York City commuters fret over their own safety after the London bombing attacks, Senator Clinton chastised the subway agency yesterday for not installing more security cameras in underground stations.
Security measures used by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority have come under closer scrutiny after last week’s attacks in London, in which three separate bombs detonated on trains in the city’s Underground system, and a fourth on a double-decker bus.
Mrs. Clinton, Senator Schumer and a number of other Democrats have called for boosting mass transit security in the wake of the attacks. Mrs. Clinton also charged the MTA has been slow to act on the need for more cameras.
“I don’t understand what the MTA is waiting for,” said Mrs. Clinton.
A spokesman for the agency responded they are working on a plan to add more cameras and other electronic security steps, but did not give details or a time on when those improvements would be made.
Mrs. Clinton spoke after meeting with a group of Democratic lawmakers from the Northeast who urged Republican congressional leaders and the White House to pump hundreds of millions of dollars more for train security into a spending bill moving through the Senate this week. She charged the MTA has been slow to craft a plan or implement tougher safety measures even though it has the money to do so.
