No More Participation Trophies: World Cup Theater Begins With High-Stakes Knockout Drama

Yes, there have been some definitive blowouts. Yes, there are several nations packing their bags having never tasted victory, leaving satisfied with what amounts to a symbolic participation trophy. But as the curtain falls on the group stage of this expanded 48-team 2926 FIFA World Cup, the hope is that the real theater is just beginning. On Sunday, the newly minted knockout stage begins with an expanded field of 32 teams. Featuring 16 first-round single elimination games, the structural shift promises to create the kind of sporting drama that may finally overshadow the intense geopolitical tensions that threatened to dominate the narrative of this tournament.The path forward is set for the United States Men’s National Team. The Americans will face Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 at San Francisco Bay Stadium in Santa Clara. The U.S. squad is among more than a dozen teams that secured their advancement early, navigating the initial matrix of the group stage before the final slate of Saturday’s matches locked in the remaining bracket.Brimming with confidence after opening victories over Paraguay and Australia, America must rebound after a 3-2 loss to Turkey, a squad that had already been mathematically eliminated. The Americans rested many of their stars during the game, allowing reserves to compete.While the loss was a reality check, the fact that the United States has reached the Round of 32 should surprise no one. Mexico and Canada, the tournament’s other co-host nations, have also marched through to the knockout phase.When FIFA announced the expansion to a 48-team field beginning with this year’s tournament, critics argued that broadening the field would inevitably dilute the quality of play, increase the frequency of uncompetitive matches, and produce lopsided results.It did at times.Czechia, Qatar, Haiti, Curacao, Tunisia were winless in all three of their matches, while New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Uzbekistan and Panama lost their first two. Heading into Saturday’s play, 15 matches ended with the winner outscoring the loser by at least three goals. The biggest spreads were Germany’s 7-1 triumph over Curacao and Canada’s 6-0 shutout of Qatar, while Portugal beat Uzbekistan, 5-0.Yet, beneath those lopsided outcomes lies a surprisingly competitive tournament. Through the first 24 games of competition, the average goal differential remained virtually identical to the metrics recorded during the 2022 tournament in Qatar.Meanwhile, the scoring rate per game is at its highest average in more than 50 years, hovering at 2.98 goals per match through 54 games — slightly better than the 2.97 posted during the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. Because of the expanded format, the record for total goals in a single World Cup will certainly fall. The previous high of 172 goals was established in Qatar; this year’s tournament saw 161 goals through just 54 of 104 total matches.For some teams, simply playing in the World Cup was more about validation than victory. For Haiti, which finished with three losses, the World Cup served as a brief respite from the political corruption, poverty and gang violence that plague the nation. It’s the biggest sporting event in the world. Just being a part of the World Cup is fantastic.”Iraq broke a painful 40-year drought, qualifying for the first time since 1986. Meanwhile several nations made their World Cup debut: Uzbekistan, Jordan, Curacao, and the tiny island nation of Cape Verde.Individually, a growing narrative continues to unfold. On June 24, his 39th birthday, an 85-foot statue of Lionel Messi was unveiled in Buenos Aires. He had already celebrated by scoring a hat trick (three goals) against Algeria on June 16 and a brace (two goals) against Austria on June 22, bringing his World Cup total to 18 goals and becoming the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.Argentina, the defending World Cup champion, could play its Round of 32 match at Miami Gardens, the very market Mr. Messi has called home for the past three years while playing for Inter Miami of Major League Soccer.What’s certain is that no more participation trophies will be handed out. The team that navigates five consecutive must-win matches will lift the only trophy that truly counts at MetLife Stadium on July 19.
