Dominic Baranello, who served as chairman of the state Democratic Party for five years and held the same post in the Suffolk County organization for more than three decades, died March 9 in Smithtown, N.Y. He was 83..
“He was the foundation on which we’ve been able to build a successful party,” current county chairman Richard Schaffer said.
Schaffer, who took over from Baranello as Suffolk leader, said Baranello “was someone who I grew up admiring for many years. He led the party when it was not popular to even be a Democrat.”
