Robert Campbell, an innovative promoter who helped shepherd Nascar through its infancy, died Friday at 83 in Richmond,Va.

Campbell helped create what is now the Richmond International Raceway. He worked as the chief spotter for CBS when it broadcast the Daytona 500, and he also drove the pace car.

He also came up with the idea of selling advertising space on race cars, starting with Richard Petty’s, which became a huge profit center for Nascar.
