It is hard to pick up a magazine these days without stumbling across a reference to Sienna Miller, the young, blonde actress and girlfriend of Jude Law, who has dislodged Kate Moss as the style icon of the year.

She has been hailed as, among other things, the “princess of boho chic”; praised for her funky, individual wardrobe of floaty tunics, ethnic jewelry, long peasant skirts, jeans tucked into boots, and her trademark – the studded “warrior woman” belt from Hampstead Bazaar. (A similar belt was advertised on eBay recently with the words “v. Sienna Miller.”)

The fact that Ms. Miller is 22 might make you worry that the bohemian vibe is only for gorgeous, slim, twenty something blondes – but nothing could be further from the truth.

If Ms. Miller is the princess of boho, the queen is Anita Pallenberg, the former model and actress, once nicknamed the “sixth Rolling Stone” after her relationships with Brian Jones and Keith Richards. In her younger years, she bore a striking resemblance to Ms. Miller, in looks, hair coloring and clothes sense.

Now 60, art lover Ms. Pallenberg whizzes around London on her black and silver Renault bicycle, and has honed her individual and funky sense of style. Ms. Miller may have youth, but Ms. Pallenberg has experience and the knowledge she was one of the first – and remains one of the best.

This was clear on a recent photo shoot to publicize Topshop’s giant jumbo thrift sale in aid of the Terence Higgins Trust. Confronted with a mountain of discarded clothes sent in by celebrities and public figures, Ms. Pallenberg wasted not a second.

She grabbed a white Burberry jersey trouser suit, donated by Cherie Blair, and had, in just a few minutes, found an Afghan tribesman’s bag, a wide leather belt and, with the help of her own battered riding boots and pashmina-cumturban, transformed the Number 10 cast-off into an ethnic take on Yves Saint Laurent’s safari chic style of 1968.

She turned an old Tracey Feith floral silk dress into a vintage hippie look, with the addition of a colorful – and mismatching – Uzbek coat, a beaded necklet, and a sequined scarf.

About 40 years separate Ms. Miller and Ms. Pallenberg, but their fresh and uninhibited zest for a look that is outside conventional fashion parameters should be an inspiration to anyone – of any age – who longs for a new wardrobe experience. The fact that Bloomsbury boho is one of the key trends this winter means there should be plenty to inspire you.
