‘Civil Rights Lawyer Stewart Gets 28 Months in Prison’
I believe Judge John Koeltl did the right thing in his sentencing of the 67-year-old civil rights lawyer [New York, “Civil Rights Lawyer Stewart Gets 28 Months in Prison,” October 17, 2006].
Since September 11, 2001, civil rights attorneys have gotten very little moral support and much criticism from elected officials, judges, the press, and the public. They often represent criminal defendants and civil rights plaintiffs who are less than model citizens.
Stewart has done more than her share of hard work for despised clients and received more criticism than money for her work.
She made a serious mistake in assisting a terrorist, Omar Abdel-Rahman, and she will pay for her crime.
However, we need Stewart and attorneys like her who are willing to work very hard for unpopular, evil, and dangerous clients.
