‘Taking the Next Step’
Joel Klein is easily the best school executive that the New York City school system has ever had, but the case he makes for bold reform suffers from the same program-driven incrementalism and lack of boldness he condemns in fixes of the past [Oped, “Taking the Next Step,” February 7, 2007].
Montana is considering a bill to end compulsory attendance in that state, and before long will vote on it, favorably I hope, so that the kind of open market in schooling that once made us the most dynamically creative nation in history can be restored.
That’s the kind of boldness Mr. Klein should be trafficking in, not endlessly tinkering with a centralized system. Let money follow student-driven choices, just as client-choice has always driven the computer explosion.
