‘Bloomberg Announces Sweeping Plans To Meet City Growth’
Mayor Bloomberg’s recent announcement of our city’s sustainability initiative shows that New York City will continue to lead the country as it has for hundreds of years [“Bloomberg Announces Sweeping Plans To Meet City Growth,” April 22, 2007].
As New York grows, it is essential to lessen each of our burdens on the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the energy we use to make this a great city.
Among the proposals to open up land for affordable housing and provide park access to all New Yorkers I am most intrigued by the Mayor’s plan to find new financing for express buses for the outer boroughs by charging commuters to enter Manhattan by car.
Not only will this speed the travel times for automobile drivers when they need to get across town quickly it will improve the quality of air for all of us.
This is particularly true for the neighborhoods near the city’s expressways, bridges, and tunnels where traffic sits at a standstill spewing exhaust fumes.
