‘After Noose Incident, Vows To Fight Racism at Columbia’
Your coverage of the racial incident at Columbia, in which a noose was hung on the door of a black professor, suggests a direct relationship between the recent visit of President Ahmadinejad and this unfortunate incident [New York, “After Noose Incident, Vows To Fight Racism at Columbia,” October 11,2007].
In inviting Mr. Ahmadinejad, President Bollinger demonstrated that bigotry, hatred, and the disrespect for the suffering of previous generations would receive acceptance at Columbia, rather than condemning those actions through the denial of a forum in which to air those views.
Therefore, in legitimizing Mr. Ahmadinejad, Mr. Bollinger gave the impression that such behavior would find acceptance at Columbia. He should learn from this incident that freedom to express ones views does not include the right to spread hatred and disrespect.
