‘Lesson of the Bagel Man’

In his column “Lesson of the Bagel Man” Andrew Wolf asserts that there is simply no demand for healthy fruits and vegetables in neighborhoods that don’t offer them — that if there were a demand, there would be an outlet selling them [New York, Friday, February 8, 2008].

While some New Yorkers enjoy the “luxury” of a grocery store or a green market just down the block, many low-income families live far from any place where they can buy healthy, affordable produce.

Poor and working class families across the city shouldn’t have to tackle multiple subway lines, buses, or cabs to purchase fruits and vegetables at reasonable prices. Rather, families — in Melrose, Washington Heights, Bed Stuy, Bushwick, Jamaica, Corona, and Willowbrook — need access to healthy food where they live and work at a price they can afford.
