‘One Cannot Tell a Lie: U.N. May Fell Its Cherry Trees’
There is no need to chop down the cherry trees at the United Nations — especially when a logical and practical solution exists to deal with the issue of their location [New York, “One Cannot Tell a Lie: U.N. May Fell Its Cherry Trees,” April 16, 2008].
Why not simply uproot them and transplant them to a location where they will bring beauty and joy into people’s lives?
Chopping down healthy flora that is doing no harm but is simply in some building’s way constitutes negative education for our young people. They learn that they have justification for destroying anything that is inconvenient to them.
At a time when we are trying to increase people’s consciousness of the need for becoming stewards of our planet rather than its despoilers, we need to instill and reinforce responsible values — beginning with transplanting those cherry trees.
