This year, party fashion was beautiful but straightforward.
The fail-safe black sheath was out in full force in 2007 (worn beautifully by Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg at the Museum of Modern Art’s Party in the Garden, and also by Marianna Sabater at the Frick Collection’s Hunt Ball).
White and red emerged as equally safe staples for any season (Anka Palitz was one of several women not looking like a bride while wearing white at the Metropolitan Opera’s opening night, while Maya Haile wore red for the Unicef Snowflake Ball).
Women also had fun accessorizing (take, for example, the book purse spotted at a New York Public Library gala).
The most culture-shifting trend to emerge this year was the wearability of formal apparel. Long gowns were once restrictive. This year women danced, flirted, and worked the room with ease —without compromising style (check out Patricia Shiah, Barbara Tober, and Lucia Hwong Gordon on the dance floor after the opening night of the New York City Ballet’s winter season).
Through it all, those known for their originality (such as Iris Apfel and Chloë Sevigny at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Couture Council award luncheon) kept us smiling, reminding us to always keep our gaze fresh.
