The maestro of the Little Orchestra Society, Dino Anagnost, didn’t move more than a few feet at the society’s annual Cathedral Candlelight Concert gala at the Carlyle Hotel. He was too busy accepting praise from concert-goers, including gala patrons Libby and Mike Angeliades, William Craig III, and Peter and Kara Georgiopoulos.
“That was a command performance,” Mary Jaharis, who sponsored the concert with her husband Michael, told Mr. Anagnost on Sunday evening.
“She was superb,” the primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of America, Archbishop Demetrios, said, describing the soloist, soprano Angela Meade, who shone underneath the dome of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.
It was Ms. Meade’s first appearance with the orchestra and the Greek Choral Society’s Metropolitan Singers. In February, she will cover Elvira in Verdi’s “Ernani” at the Metropolitan Opera. Her favorite piece in the concert was also her favorite Christmas carol, “Oh Holy Night.”
Held for the 31st year at the cathedral, the concert also featured a range of choral work, such as “Te Deum” by Mozart and “In the Bleak Midwinter” by Gustav Holst. But the carols were the crowd-pleasers that set the tone for the rest of the evening.
“After singing ‘Hark! The Herald Angel Sings,’ how could you be in a bad mood?” Linda Tavlarios said.
