Reunion Revelry
The audience at the Hudson Theater roared last Sunday as it watched a short film, “Reunion,” that starred comedian David Siegel as a young man just back from his first trip to Israel.
Missing the Dead Sea, the man pours Diamond table salt into his bathtub. Missing the Western Wall, he prays at a hardball court at West 4th Street. He finds the cure for his withdrawal symptoms at a social event for alumni of Israel trips sponsored by Taglit-Birthright Israel and the Jewish Enrichment Center.
This gathering was one such event and not just another happy hour, but rather the third annual Broadway Purim Shpiel, a production of the National Entertainment Fund for the Cultural Arts. A highlight was “American Idol” contestant Constantine Maroulis singing “Heaven on Their Minds” from the show “Jesus Christ Superstar,” with the words changed to “Haman on Their Minds.”
After the show, the comedian Mr Siegel, who is performing at Caroline’s tomorrow, said he’d use kosher sea salt the next time he took a bath. It seemed that many of the guests reminiscing about Israel would follow his lead.
